About Us
The Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce is an organization representing all business. We are located in Spruce Grove and support businesses in the City and surrounding district, throughout the calendar year. Business demands a collective voice and a united representation at all levels of government. The Chamber of Commerce does this by proactively addressing business and community issues that effect the business environment and growth of Spruce Grove & surrounding district.
Membership is growing and we are now 600 members strong! This is encouraging as we are one of the larger chamber organizations in the Province!
From the beginning the chamber has strived for the betterment in the business community, civic government, provincial and federal government, and to the people of the area. To this day the chamber has continually advanced their horizons, to accomplish what the membership prescribes: "to foster confidence, progress and success throught the synergy of professionalism, cooperation, respect, astute vision and sound leadership".
History of Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce
Several years before our present Chamber was organized in 1963, the Spruce Grove community was instrumental in forming, and was active in "Hi-way 16 West Chamber of Commerce", organized to serve the communities of Winterburn, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Carvel and Duffield. Murray Byers of Stony Plain was the first president, Harry McLeod the 1st Vice-President and Ted Gamble, also of Spruce Grove, the 1st Secretary-Treasurer. After a few years of service to this rather large and scattered community, it was disbanded with Stony Plain forming its own Chamber. After a lapse of a few more years, Harry McLeod and some other public-spirited local citizens decided Spruce Grove should also have a Chamber of its own. After a preliminary meeting in September of 1963 an official organizational meeting was held on October 22nd, 1963. Bob Leonard was elected as first secretary, Harold McLaughlin, president and Ev Hall, vice-president. A ten member board of directors included: Claude Eccles, Earl Nelson, Ferd Erhardt, Neville Peel, Bruce Fuhr, Rev. L.F. Schoepp, Richard Fuhr, Henry Singer, Ted Gamble and Don Woods.
From the very beginning, and in keeping with the designation, Spruce Grove and District Chamber of Commerce, our organization, has been very successful in getting active participation from all sectors of the community both town and country. Projects for the betterment of the whole community were actively supported from the start, the very first major one being to promote the provision of adequate recreational facilities for this district, which finally resulted in the development of Serplex (now part of Broxton Park School).
